Can Hands Really Heal?
By Tom Leigh
Can Hands Really Heal? There are plenty of persuasive people such as Barbara Ann Brennan who say they can. So I tried it for myself. After all what could I lose by it when my good and faithful friend of twelve years had just been given three weeks by the vet. Yes Buster was my dog. His biopsy old us that he had the most malignant form of cancer, so advanced it was untreatable. Having lost my older brother and my first wife the mother of my two children from cancer, I knew how it went. I couldn’t help them and I lost them both; but maybe, just maybe learning from that I could help Buster? As I said what had I to lose? At this time I had been retired from practicing and lecturing about hypnotherapy for a few years. I’d learned a lot about the power of suggestion in that time and since. Was hands-on healing merely suggestion? Did it work like the placebo effect, like a visit to the dentist, which when on arriving at the waiting room, somehow, mysteriously, the pain disappeared? Or was it more, much more than that? I had read about it over the years of course, but on the whole I’d mostly my mind always edging to the scientific side, discounted it. Maybe it worked ...? Perhaps I’d just never been ready to try it with a human being, though as a hypnotherapist I knew that a person coming to see me was hypnotised even as he or she walked in the door. They were in pain and so ready to accept whatever I told them with reservations of course to end it. But a dog, how would that work? But work it did. At first I was just laying my hands on him and putting myself into an auto or ‘self’ hypnotic trance. Buster liked it and before too long his breathing slowed too. The three weeks prognosis came and went and Buster looked as fit as a fiddle. His coat was shining and the place on his gum where his cancerous lump along with three of his teeth had been removed was looking healthy too. As well as a biopsy we had had an x-ray done and this had shown a huge mass on one of his lungs, hence the three week prognosis. We, my wife and I, decided to take the vets advice and keep him on antibiotics to keep his mouth free of infections. We would go back in a month as the vet expected that the mass on his lung would have spread through his lymph system and through his entire body by then and it would be time to put the old boy to sleep. However he was as bright as a button and spry as a pup when we took him in a month later. Always a friendly dog Buster turned on the charm with receptionist and the vet. The lumps in his lymph nodes had gone down and the operation in his mouth had remained clear. All in all he was looking good and healthy. If the vet was surprised she hid it well and said she must have caught it all when she removed the tumour. No mention was made of the shadow on his lung or the swelling in his lymph nodes, but I determined to read up some more on hands on healing. Maybe there was more to it than I knew. |

Thank you for sharing this fasinating story, Tom. I would believe that Buster felt the love, that you have for each other. Keep up the good work and best wishes go out to Buster. Best to you. Frederick

Thank you Frederick. Though Buster eventually died of Cancer, he live nine months beyond his three weeks prognosis. During all of that time he was fit and healthy, lithe and glossy coated. He surprised everyone as an old dog, never mind one riddled with cancer. The cancer then resurfaced suddenly, in his mouth where it began, and within a matter of a few weeks we were forced to put him to sleep. I do now believe that hands can really heal. Tom
Very heart warming story. Other than a couple of typos, I believe you have writing talent. Keep up the work of sharing and informing.
